I've done something rash, and I need help.  Lots of help.

I keep reading journals about people being impersonated on social networking sites like Twitter and YouTube. I remember reading journals posted by Arctic Sekai and TaniDaReal with tales of impersonations.

I even heard on TWIT #198 about Tony LaRussa being impersonated on Twitter.  (As the Twitter Blog notes, impersonating violates the Twitter TOS, but how widespread is enforcement?  And how possible is it to make sure people on the 'Net are who they claim they are?)

In positive thinking, it's harder than it should be to figure out what other presences people have on the Web: MySpace, YouTube, Ustream, LiveJournal, DeviantArt, etc. Part of what's making it hard is the inconsistent layouts of each site, and inconsistent places to put information about where else on the Web people are.

Well, I made a very spur of the moment decision.  I thought, rightly or wrongly, that it would be a good idea for anyone with any sort of multi-site following to have a central library people could go to for sorting out who's the real McCoy and who's a fan or fanatic who went too far.

I bought the domain name whos4real.com yesterday and installed a wiki on it, to satisfy that perceived void.

I need help:

  • about how good an idea this is,
  • getting the word out, if it's a good idea,
  • putting my head on straight, if it was a mistake.

I don't discount the possibility that I'm crazy.  Sometimes, I think I must be.  But whatever kind of help I need, there's no doubt I really need help.
