Has tinkered with a wide variety of home and personal computer systems ranging from the Apple II to the TRS-80 Model 100 almost since he learned to read, and continuing to tinker today.  Favorite PC: the Commodore 64.  PC used daily: a modern IBM compatible with a Debian-based OS.

What I Do

I work tech support and PC repair for a small ISP. I haven't answered the dreaded cupholder call yet, but I've answered some doozies that come close. I've been told that I'm so skilled and courteous that if I were a doctor, most of my customers would trust me implicitly. Lies, I'm sure.

Recently, I've been made a moderator of the Bits and Bytes board at Fur Affinity Forums (FAF). I go by the same name on that forum as I do here, ArielMT.

i think it is a pidgin issue, cause sadly the YIM app itself can still connect... in windows... and it's making me a -leeeetle- crazy cause i can't do diddly in windows other than games. >.<

Sorry for not replying sooner...

Eva pointed me to a change to make. Pidgin -> Accounts -> Your yahoo account -> Edit Account -> Advanced tab.

Change the Pager Server setting from scs.msg.yahoo.com to 66.163.181.173. The change is instant, as soon as you hit OK.

Annnnnnnnnd... It quit working this evening.

The fix is to install pidgin from GetDeb, at least until the Ubuntu repository catches up. Version 2.5.7 works, and the cause was Yahoo! killing off support for YIM versions 6.0 through 7.5.

yea, i found the same info, but i still have no idea how to install the 2.5.7 bleeding edge release..
i guess i'll wait till fricken pidgin is ready in synaptic. thanks, though ^.^ OOH! btw, i figured out what i did wrong with the linksys. it turns out, that, though there is a connection with USB, it doesn't allow your computer to have ANY control of the router, so i just connected a cat5 and went to the http://[ip] and it went like a clockwork. i even named the connection [fuck_you] for someone who was tapping into it :P talk to ya later ^.^

Download the debs from GetDeb: pidgin, pidgin-data, libpurple0, and libpurple-bin. Then open a terminal:

cd [whatever directory you downloaded the packages into]
sudo apt-get remove pidgin pidgin-data libpurple0 libpurple-bin

Take note of whatever extra packages it wants to remove as well, as you'll want to install them back later.

sudo dpkg -i pidgin_[press tab] pidgin-d[press tab] libpurple0[press tab] libpurple-d[press tab]
sudo apt-get install [whatever packages the apt-get remove command removed]

That should get you on the bleeding edge of pidgin.
