ReadMe for Motif (OTS) by ArielMT@Thornton2.com The most common window manager used in commercial UNIX systems is Motif. It's used less so in Linux and BSD, mainly because Motif is a commercial window manager. A free Motif clone called LessTif is available, though... The Motif (OTS) theme is almost completely unlike the Motif environment, but it uses the same graphics/widget style. This theme was actually designed to be used in conjunction with the Motif-JTF WindowBlinds skin by John T. Folden. In fact, virtually all of the graphics used in this theme were copied directly from the skin. Whatever wasn't directly copied was copied and altered to fit the form. The skin asks that proper credit be given where credit is due, so the credit for the images is as follows: Artist: John T. Folden Email: jtfolden@erinet.com Homepage: http://www.erinet.com/jag/NeXTVIEW/ ___________________________________________________________ Even though this is an OTS-compliant theme, you may need to edit the theme's step.rc file, as well as the barleft.rc, barright.rc, and themevars.rc files in the theme's config directory. The reasons are that this theme is designed to be used with the Motif-JTF WindowBlinds skin and the way it interacts with desktop2.dll, and shortcut-fired launching of WinAmp by GeekAmp. Read on. ___________________________________________________________ ATTENTION: If this is the first time you are using a theme that follows the Open Theme Standard, go to http://ls-ots.cjb.net, read the requirements in the installation section, and follow the instructions on setting up your personal config files. 1. Install the theme Unzip the theme archive to your LiteStep\themes directory with path information. 2. Edit themevars.rc Navigate to the themes\Motif\config directory in your file manager. If a themevars.rc file exists, edit it and ensure all paths have been set correctly. 3. Edit step.rc Navigate to the LiteStep directory in your file manager. If you are using LSTS, run LSTS and select the theme. Otherwise, edit step.rc so that it contains the following line and nothing else: include "$LiteStepDir$themes\Motif\step.rc" And recycle LiteStep. ___________________________________________________________ The theme is a vertical bar which starts by default on the right edge of the screen. The strip at the very top of the bar hides the entire bar when clicked once; clicking it again will reveal the bar. Below this strip, the bar is divided into six blocks. The top block is the systray and has room for 15 icons. It can't autosize or be resized, but my own system needed a systray that big because I often use 12 icons. The second block is the label and is divided into four lines: current window, used RAM/used swap/used CPU, current date and time, and system uptime. Because of the way Windows NT4 handles CPU metering, it's disabled in NT4 by default to keep LiteStep from crashing. The third block is the VWM and is set up for four desktops. Right-click to select a desktop, or left-drag to move windows from desktop to desktop. The fourth block is the OTS shortcut block. The Open Theme Standard explicitly defines 13 program evars, which are used by 13 of the 15 shortcuts. In order: File manager Text editor DOS box Audio & Media player Image viewer Image editor Browser RAS/DUN Email client IRC client FTP client IM The other two buttons are: switch the bar to the opposite edge (left or right), and switch tasks in the taskbar between boxes with large icons and bars with small icons. The fifth block is the GeekAmp/LSXCommand. The long bar shows the current song when WinAmp is running, and nothing when WinAmp isn't. No matter what, though, you can click on it and use it as an instant run-box for Windows commands or LiteStep !bangs. The play/pause and eject buttons will launch WinAmp if it's not running. (If they don't, you need to edit themevars.rc according to step 2 above.) The remainder of the bar is reserved for the taskbar. All task buttons are shown, regardless of which desktop its window is on or its window's current state. The theme is resolution independent. Only, the higher the resolution, the more room for tasks. ___________________________________________________________ You may have to tweak the following files if you don't use the Motif JTF WindowBlinds skin with this theme: step.rc config\barleft.rc config\barright.rc The reason is to fix the SDALeft and SDARight settings. If you do get and use the skin, you will have to make some modifications to the motif-jtf.uis file to make it look like the screenshot: * In the [Button0] section, change XCoord from 44 to 63. This will move the minimize button left a spot. * In the [Button1] section, change XCoord from 24 to 43. This will move the maximize button left a spot. * In the [Button2] section, change XCoord from 5 to 24, and change Align from 0 to 1. This will move the close button from the left edge to the right edge. Save the file and reload the skin. ___________________________________________________________ Motif (OTS) is copyright (C) 2003 by Don Thornton II under the terms of the GNU General Public License 2.0 or later.
